With ongoing investment into IT and telecom by both government and private sectors, the IT employment market offers many IT vacancies, not just in the Greater London area but all over the country. For instance the highest pay rises for IT jobs occurred in Wales last year, with a growth of 6.7%.

Since the UK has one of the largest and most diverse economies in the world, many IT vacancies are offered across a large variety of industries such as finance, banking, food and beverage productions, retail, defence, pharmaceutical, etc. Despite the economic slow down, companies still have to be aware that there are key IT skills that require particular attention and attract a premium. With resignation rates levelled off at 7.1% in 2007, companies need to retain staff with premium skills, which means offering better salary packages. A survey conducted by Computer Economics in 2007 showed that 74% of IT employers experience difficulties when recruiting, up from 58% the previous year. During the same period, a skills shortage resulted in an inability to follow the fast pace of IT jobs creation and contributed to a 4.4% salary growth last year.

Salaries in the IT employment market

Salaries for permanent IT staff have risen by four times the UK average in the past 12 months, according to a survey of more than 5,000 employees in the sector. Rising demand for senior project managers and business analysts has pushed salaries for IT staff up by an average of 15% over the past year, the Atsco’s IT employment research reveals. Pay levels for IT staff have risen faster in the past year than they have in the previous five years, so cost containment remains a top priority for IT departments.
