About UNIX jobs
UNIX was created in 1969 by US telecoms giant AT&T as a hardware independent operating system. AT&T gave UNIX away to a number of universities in the US which in turn evolved into a number of different variants. Many large IT organisations including HP & IBM have since developed their own forms of the language resulting in the introduction of Linux, AIX, Solaris and HP-UX.
The spread of UNIX and its variants of the language has led to an increasing number of opportunities for UNIX system administrator and UNIX system analyst professionals in The United Kingdom. UNIX roles are typically UNIX administrators, along with UNIX system administrator and UNIX system analyst roles.
UNIX salaries
The average salary for a UNIX position at a lower level is around £27,000, with UNIX Administrator jobs at around £40,000. More senior roles such as UNIX System Analyst jobs are at around £50,000 per year.
